I’m the type of person who walks everywhere. My choice of footwear, however, sometimes has other plans. I switch between stylish flats, heeled boots, and casual sneakers for the last few months, but find that I’m still missing out on the comfort I need to walk around town all day. That’s why I’m on the hunt for supportive sneakers that’ll give my tired feet some relief, and in my search, I even turned to the experts for recommendations. One podiatrist told me that the Hoka Clifton 9 sneakers are a “classic for all-day comfort” — and they’re on rare sale right now.

Dr. Megan Ishibashi, a Bay Area, California-based podiatrist, credits a “lightweight feel and moderate cushioning” for making the Hoka Clifton 9 sneakers an ideal option for walking — though the brand also recommends them for everyday runs. They’re stacked with a plush cushioning that’s designed to support and revitalize feet. The pair protects against impact, while responsive foam provides a bouncy feel to make walking easier.

There’s also additional comfort thanks to a breathable knit fabric, which offers a snug sock-like fit that won’t feel constrictive. Another podiatrist, Julie Schottenstein, DPM, shares that this soft material doesn’t irritate the skin, making it great for conditions like bunions and hammertoes. “[It] also allows for the foot to expand, as opposed to less-flexible material,” said Dr. Schottenstein. Other bonuses? These Hoka shoes feature a durable rubber outsole, which provides excellent traction. Meanwhile, the rocker sole allows for a smoother heel-to-toe transition.

Dr. Ishibashi adds that the Clifton 9 sneakers are particularly beneficial for those with a neutral foot (a.k.a with a normal arch) who need less support compared to the Bondi 9 shoes, which she explained is more ideal for those with chronic foot pain such as plantar fasciitis or arthritis. The Bondi shoes offer more cushioning and a rocker sole that “takes the pressure off the heel and forefront,” said Dr. Ishibashi. Keep in mind, though, that the wide base can be too bulky for some, she advises.

Both podiatrists say that ample cushioning, shock absorption, arch support, stability, and flexibility are essential when it comes to a quality everyday shoe to reduce strain and injury on your feet while protecting them. Dr. Ishibashi suggests avoiding a flimsy shoe that you can “wring like a towel, bend in half, or roll up into a ball” because it won’t support the arches, control motion, or protect the foot from shock. Instead, the bottom of the shoe should be firm in the middle to “keep your foot stable, but still bend easily at the toes so you can walk naturally,” she explained.

And it’s not just these podiatrists who recommend the Clifton 9 sneakers: They have the approval of the American Podiatric Medical Association, too. Reviewers also can’t get enough of these ultra-cushioned footwear, which is already selling out at Zappos. They rave that these kicks feel like “walking on a cloud,” are “super comfy for miles,” and provide “immediate relief” to feet.

Spending long periods of time walking or standing can wreak havoc on your feet, so try the on-sale Hoka Clifton 9 Sneakers for a supportive, comfortable pair. While you’re at it, check out more podiatrist-recommended shoes from fan-favorite brands, below.
