When it comes to beauty advice, Laura Geller always delivers. The 67-year-old makeup artist and founder of Laura Geller Beauty makes sure to share her top makeup tips with the world, and now, she’s divulging her best advice for applying mascara to mature eyes. Her tool of choice? The Laura Geller Always There Waterproof Mascara.

Always There Waterproof Mascara

The makeup mogul revealed to Prevention there are three makeup essentials that “a lot of women tend to forget,” especially as they get older. She calls this trifecta the “three E” rule: eyebrows, eyeliner, and eyelashes—the latter being especially important. “[Women over 40] tend to lose our eyelashes, they’re not as strong as they used to be,” she says. “I think it’s important that you do mascara, or even put on false lashes. It makes the world of difference.”

As for which specific mascara does the job, Geller recommends the Always There Waterproof Mascara from her eponymous brand, which boasts a creamy, buildable formula that’s 100% waterproof and delivers long-lasting volume without clumping, smudging, or flaking. When choosing—and applying—a mascara for mature skin, here’s what Geller specifically recommends:

Focus on volume

Geller emphasizes the top trick when it comes to mascara on mature eyes: “Volume, volume, volume. It’s less about length,” she explains. “You’re trying to thicken your lashes. Don’t even worry about lengthening them.”

This is the Always There Waterproof Mascara’s superpower. Thanks to a highly pigmented formula, it features great volumizing power that Geller calls “extra bold,” as well as a special brush that’s shaped to deliver the right dose of thickness with every swipe. “This brush is designed with both soft and wavy fibers so it can fully coat your lashes without clumping,” Geller explains in a video on the brand’s website.

Choose waterproof

“A lot of mature eyes have problems with watery eyes or sensitivity, and they [should] stay away from using things that sort of irritate their eyes,” says Geller. That’s why she recommends waterproof mascara, especially if you struggle with leaky eyes and disappearing mascara over the day.

Geller’s rec is “a great waterproof,” option, says the makeup pro. True to its name, this mascara has a 100% waterproof formula that always stays on your lashes without budging or smudging. And, it’s gentle on your lashes, too. “I never liked waterproof mascaras because when you went to take them off, sometimes it could pull out your lashes, but not with this one,” Geller told Prevention in a previous interview. It coats and hydrates your lashes, without causing any harm.”

Opt for black

When choosing a shade, Geller always recommends “the richest pigmented black” for the most transformative, impactful effect on your eyes. “A lot of women still tell me, ‘Should I be wearing black mascara? I’m a porcelain skin. You know, is that too harsh for me? Maybe I should be wearing a brown or a dark brown,’” she says. “And I always say black is the best, it’s just the best.”

The Always There Waterproof Mascara comes in a richly pigmented black that’s formulated to make your eyes look more prominent—no matter your skin tone or eye color.
