Experts recommend looking for the following when shopping for shoes with arch support:
✔️ Balanced cushioning. Pourziaee recommends looking for a “balanced level” of cushioning that’s not overly soft or unstable. “Those with normal and high arches [should] look for a shoe with extra cushioning and shock absorption as well as a curved last shape,” says Sharkey.
✔️ Contoured insole. “Look for a shoe that has an insole that contours to the bottom of your foot or has the ability to add additional arch support,” advises Daughtry. Pourziaee also says that a removable insole is “also helpful if custom orthotics are needed.”
✔️ Deep heel cup. Daughtry says this is important too, for adding stability and support. “In addition to arch support, a well-designed sneaker should have a stable heel counter to control rearfoot motion,” says Pourziaee.
✔️ Wide midsole. Sharkey says if you have a flatter foot, look for a shoe with a wider midsole to support the mid-portion of your arch.
✔️ Roomy toe box. “A slightly wider toe box can improve comfort and reduce crowding, especially during long periods of walking,” notes Pourziaee.
