“There are two main benefits of using an electric toothbrush—safety and timing,” says Keith Arbeitman, D.D.S., dentist and co-founder of the Arbeitman & Shein aesthetic and restorative dentistry in New York City.

“Safety, because some electric toothbrush models can limit the amount of pressure you can put on the teeth and gums. The majority of dental work I do is either as a consequence of someone brushing too hard and damaging their teeth and gums or not brushing hard or long enough and allowing bacteria to linger, causing gingivitis or cavities,” explains Dr. Arbeitman.

“When brushing with a traditional toothbrush, you need to use them for a full two minutes (for a proper clean),” says Dr. Arbeitman. So, the timers on electric toothbrushes can be very helpful for keeping you on track. “Mouthpiece toothbrushes are automated in a way that with the press of a button, the brush does the work for you—using just enough pressure to effectively clean, without the risk of injury,” he adds.
