✔️ Consider whether you want instant or long-term results. Many eye creams use ingredients that support collagen production and skin elasticity to help improve firmness and texture over time with consistent use, according to Dr. Shah—but others offer immediate, temporary tightening. These treatments “contain ingredients that dry into a thin tightening film on the skin” and “act almost like ‘Spanx’ for the eye area, creating a quick smoothing and firming effect,” Dr. Shah explains. Some eye creams even offer both immediate and long-term benefits.

✔️ Look for key anti-aging ingredients. Experts recommend looking for formulas with peptides, retinol, caffeine, antioxidants, and other ingredients with anti-aging benefits. “Peptides help strengthen and thicken the skin by boosting collagen production, while retinol also helps to boost collagen and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Garshick notes. Caffeine is also great for helping reduce under-eye bags and puffiness, says Dr. Shah.

✔️ Check for hydrating and soothing ingredients, too. Mature skin is often characterized by dryness and a weakened skin barrier—which is why Dr. Shah recommends formulas that also contain barrier-supporting ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and niacinamide. “Hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid boost hydration and help plump the skin,” explains Dr. Garshick. She also recommends niacinamide, which “helps brighten and soothe the skin,” and antioxidants, which “protect the skin from environmental stressors that can contribute to changes in the skin.”

✔️ Opt for thicker, richer formulas. “In terms of texture, richer formulas like creams, balms, or nourishing serums are often best suited for mature skin because they provide additional hydration and comfort,” Dr. Shah says. “Those with mature or dry skin benefit from richer, more nourishing cream formulas that provide hydration alongside the active ingredients,” agrees Dr. Garshick. “Thinner gel formulas can be good in the mornings to layer easily under makeup, but they may not provide enough moisture for skin that is drier or more crepey.”
