This summer, it feels like there’s a new food recall every day. The produce section has been especially fraught, with lettuce linked to the huge cyclosporiasis outbreak and jalapeños contaminated with salmonella. Now, you may want to take a second look at any sprouts in your fridge.

According to an announcement made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on August 22, Everything Sprouts, LLC voluntarily recalled alfalfa sprouts linked to a salmonella and E. coli outbreak. The recall was expanded on August 28 to include sprout mixes that may contain the affected sprouts.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Can consuming the recalled sprouts make you sick?

According to a food safety alert released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on September 1, the recalled alfalfa sprouts are linked to a salmonella and E. coli outbreak that has already sickened 55 people in 15 states and resulted in four hospitalizations. As of right now, there have been no deaths reported.

Again, the outbreak involves two foodborne illness pathogens—salmonella and E. coli—which means it’s possible to become infected with both if you consume contaminated sprouts. In fact, there are already two reported cases of this, according to the CDC.

Infections from salmonella and E. coli both have similar digestive symptoms, which may include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting, and fever. For many people, symptoms go away on their own. However, the CDC warns that “children younger than 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems” are at particular risk for more severe illness and that anyone experiencing severe symptoms should get medical attention right away.

What should you do with a recalled product?

The FDA is urging any consumers who have the recalled sprouts or sprout mixes in their home to throw them out immediately and “carefully clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that the product may have touched” to limit the spread of foodborne illness. If you’ve already eaten any of the affected sprouts and have any health concerns, contact a doctor right away.
