  • This workout is designed to build lean muscle mass, which can affect your body’s basal metabolic rate.

Exercise pro Denise Austin, 69, took to Instagram to share a pair of full-body moves that she says will “boost your metabolism” by strengthening your muscles. Even better, because her quick, easy routine has two benefits—it’ll work your muscles and raise your heart rate—she calls it “double the workout in half the time.”

Could it be too good to be true? As it turns out, there’s truth to Austin’s claims. According to the Cleveland Clinic, building lean muscle mass can increase your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which refers to “the minimum number of calories your body needs to function at a basic level.” (Still, keep in mind that BMR is just one factor that can affect weight and calorie use.)

So, want to try Austin’s two-minute, “metabolism-boosting” workout for yourself? Check out the instructions below.

1. Squat and lift

Begin in a squat with your arms down, then swing your arms up, helping to propel yourself as you jump into a standing position. Austin suggests repeating this move for a full minute.

“We are targeting the thighs and buttocks with this one,” Austin wrote in her Instagram caption.

2. Kick and lunge

Begin in a standing position. Kick one leg all the way forward, then swing the same leg all the way back, lowering into a lunge in one clean move. Austin recommends doing this—“an absolute powerhouse [move] for the abs, legs, arms, and core”—for 30 seconds on each side.
