Most of us have more than one skin concern. The benefits of rosehip oil (extracted from the seeds of a type of rose) may help with a slew of them, like acne, dull or uneven skin tone, inflammation, dryness, visible scars, and other damage. Here’s what you need to know about the oil before adding it to your routine.

That’s because it is a cocktail of several derm-approved skincare heroes—fatty acids and antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E—that can help out with a variety of skin problems. Essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid support the skin barrier to aid in regulating hydration and protect the deeper layers from outside irritants; antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties to help nourish and repair skin and improve its appearance.

What to know before using rosehip oil

Pure is better

Rosehip oil can be used all by itself; reach for products labeled “organic,” “100% rosehip oil,” or “pure.” You can find rosehip oil online or at drugstores.

Test it out first

Before applying rosehip oil to your face, do a patch test on your arm to make sure your skin doesn’t have a bad reaction to it. If you develop a rash, hives, blisters, burning, or other irritation in the test area, see a dermatologist for advice on what product might be a better fit for you.

Use SPF

This is always a must, but since rosehip oil can act as an exfoliant, it will make your skin more sun-sensitive than usual. Stock up on the best mineral sunscreen to protect skin.
