Costco Recalls Prosecco Bottles Because They Could Spontaneously Explode

  • Costco recalled a variety of Kirkland Signature prosecco because bottles could spontaneously explode.
  • It’s unclear why, or if any related injuries have been reported.
  • The recall only impacts one specific type of Kirkland prosecco, detailed below.

If you’re expecting to celebrate an occasion that may call for popping a bottle, make sure to check its label first. Costco just recalled a lot of its store brand Kirkland Signature Prosecco over explosion concerns.

Costco sent a letter to its members who purchased the alcohol, and then posted it on its website’s recall page. The letter indicated that customers who purchased Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene (item number: 1879870) between April 25 and August 26 are at risk of having a faulty bottle. According to the release, the bottles could shatter, even when not handled or in use.

The prosecco was sold in 12 states, including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

At the time of publication, the retailer has not disclosed whether or not injuries related to the recall have occurred, nor is there any additional information as to why the bottles are prone to exploding.

The recalled champagne has a light purple label that could be easily confused for Kirkland‘s Asolo Prosecco, which has a purple label, so make sure you triple-check the variety you have before disposing of the goods.

What to do with recalled product

If you purchased a recalled bottle, Costco’s notice specifically states: Do not return it. Instead, the retailer advises placing it in paper towels or a plastic bag before disposing of it in the trash. You can get fully refunded for recalled bottles by presenting the recall letter at your nearest warehouse. If you have questions regarding the announcement, you can contact Ethica Wines by email at [email protected] or by phone at (786) 810-7132 between Monday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST. If you experience injury related to a shattering product while attempting to dispose of it, seek medical care immediately.
