  • The U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced the October recall of over 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese.
  • The bags were recalled because they may contain metal fragments.
  • Here’s a list of impacted products.

Unrelated to the recent Boar’s Head cheese recall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced the classification of recalled shredded cheese sold at multiple retailers in 31 states. More than 1.5 million store-brand bags were recalled because they may contain metal fragments, according to an enforcement report from the agency.

Keep reading to learn the few details available about the recall, including the cheese brands and varieties affected.

Shredded cheese recall details

The recall was initially made by the FDA and the manufacturer in October, but no press release was issued. That means we have only details from the agency’s recent enforcement report that classified the recall as a Class II action, meaning that use of recalled cheese “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

The cheese was manufactured by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. and distributed as store-brand shredded cheese to various retailers, including Aldi, Target, Walmart, Publix, Sprouts, and more. If you believe you have any of the recalled product, do not eat it.

The affected cheeses can be categorized by flavor and label, outlined below.

You can find the affected bags’ best-by dates, UPC codes, and other identification information in the FDA’s report.

What to do with recalled product

Because a press release was not published for this recall, there isn’t specific advice from the agency or manufacturer on how to respond. However, standard protocol is to either dispose of the product or return it to its place of purchase for a refund.
