Shortly after the Christmas holiday, more than 2,800 lbs of ground beef were recalled in six states by the United States Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) because the meat could be contaminated with E. coli, an illness-causing bacteria.
Understandably, the FSIS is concerned that tainted meat could be lingering in freezers or refrigerators during this relaxed end-of-year period. At the time of publication, no related illnesses have been reported. More specific details are outlined below.
Ground beef recall details
Mountain West Food Group, LLC based out of Idaho and the FSIS recalled approximately 2,855 lbs of Forward Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef sold in 16-oz vacuum-sealed packages. The meat was produced on December 16, 2025 and was stamped with the use or freeze-by date of January 12, 2026. “EST 2083” was also printed on the packaging. The beef was provided to distributors in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Washington. Potential contamination was discovered during routine testing which showed the presence of E. coli O26, a less common type of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), per the FSIS.
About E. coli infection
Illness contracted from E. coli can show symptoms up to 34 days after exposure to the organism, which include (often bloody) diarrhea and vomiting, according to the FSIS. Recommended treatment is vigorous hydration and supportive care. Most people recover within a week, but, rarely, some develop a more severe infection and a type of kidney failure called Hemolytic uremic syndrome. Children under five, older adults, and the immunocompromised are most susceptible, and symptoms include easy bruising, pale skin, and decreased urination, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. If you notice any of these symptoms after consuming potentially recalled beef, seek medical care immediately.
What to do with recalled ground beef
