Tuna Recalled Over Potential Botulism Still in Stores, FDA Reports

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning that previously recalled Tri-Union Seafoods select lots of canned tuna may still be on shelves.
  • Quarantined products were accidentally shipped to stores after the recall.
  • Here’s a list of impacted products.

A recall from last year is once again relevant after quarantined products were accidentally sent to stores in multiple states. Last February, Tri-Union Seafoods and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of select lots of canned tuna products. The initial recall included products sold under Trader Joe’s, H-E-B, Genova, and Van Camp’s labels, and was initiated after the supplier notified the company that the “easy open” pull tab can lids had a manufacturing defect.

The announcement warned that this defect may cause the cans to leak or become contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. Clostridium botulinum is the bacterium that causes botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), it may occur in improperly canned foods due to low-oxygen conditions. Symptoms of botulism generally appear between 12 and 36 hours after infected food is consumed, and often begin with nausea, vomiting, weakness, and dizziness. These symptoms can expand to include neurological and gastrointestinal issues, and can even lead to death.

Although the affected products were initially quarantined, a January 16, 2026, announcement shared by the FDA cautioned consumers that a third-party distributor shipped some of the canned tuna to stores by accident. If you believe you have impacted product, do not eat it.

Which products are affected?

This inadvertent shipment of recalled products included the following:

Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 oz 4 Pack

  • UPC: 4800073265
  • Can Code: S84N D2L
  • Best By Date: 1/21/2028

Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 oz 4 Pack

  • UPC: 4800073265
  • Can Code: S84N D3L
  • Best By Date: 1/24/2028

Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt 5.0 oz

  • UPC: 4800013275
  • Can Code: S88N D1M
  • Best By Date: 1/17/2028

The products were shipped to six different chains across nine states—Meijer in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, Giant Foods in Maryland and Virginia, and Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions in California.

A full list of canned tuna products affected by the initial February 2025 recall can be found here.

What to do with the products

If you have a canned tuna product that matches one of the recall listings, you should either throw it away, return it to the place of purchase for a refund, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and replacement coupon. The announcement specifically warns that it should not be consumed even if it doesn’t appear to be spoiled.
