The 9 Best Walking Shoes for Wide Feet, According to Podiatrists

If you have wide feet, you’re probably painfully aware of how difficult it can be to find properly-fitting walking shoes—one that won’t suffocate your toes or cause foot pain for hours on end. Thankfully, the best walking shoes for wide feet can provide the right fit—complete with spacious toe boxes, great arch and heel support, and more—to keep your feet comfortable and pain-free.

Shoemakers define wide feet as a width “that is more than half the length of the foot,” says Sean Peden, M.D., a Yale Medicine foot and ankle surgeon and assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine. “So if your foot is 8 inches long, regular width should be around 4 inches.” However, even if you don’t have naturally wide feet, you may still experience difficulties finding shoes that fit around injuries, bunions, hammertoes, or swelling.

Meet the Experts: Sean Peden, M.D., a Yale Medicine foot and ankle surgeon and assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine; Adenike Sonaike, D.P.M., a podiatrist and medical director with Baker Street Health in Motion; Brandon Engle, P.T., clinic director at ATI Physical Therapy; Arianna Gianakos, D.O., a sports medicine foot and ankle surgeon and assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine; Nasim Kalhor, D.P.M., a board-certified podiatrist in California and founder of Dr. Anti-Fungus; and Derek Roach, owner of Flow Feet Orthopedic Shoes and general shoe expert.

Just because you need a bit of extra width, though, doesn’t mean you should just opt for the next size up. “Wearing a shoe too large can cause ankle and foot tendonitis, tripping or falling, and changes to your skin on the bottom of the foot like shearing calluses and blisters,” warns Adenike Sonaike, D.P.M., a podiatrist and medical director with Baker Street Health in Motion.

Instead, walking and running shoes made for wide feet provide better arch support, reducing the chances of excessive inward or outward rolling of the foot, also known as overpronation or underpronation, explains Brandon Engle, P.T., clinic director at ATI Physical Therapy. “A wider shoe also provides a wider base for support which can improve walking form and posture. Additionally, there is more even distribution of pressure across the foot, reducing the strain on the body,” he says.

Luckily, many shoe brands offer specialty sizing for wide feet, labeled “wide,” “X-wide,” or “XX-wide” (some brands also follow the standard number sizing with letters D-E to indicate width), in addition to shoes made with roomy toe boxes, flexible uppers, and more to accommodate width. Ahead, shop the best, most top-rated walking shoes that experts recommend for wide feet, so you can get your steps in comfortably.

Shoe stores or podiatrists can offer foot measurements using a Brannock measuring device, Sonaike explains. Some may also offer foot scanners. These tools can help you determine how wide of a shoe you need and what to look for on labels.✔️ Go for a wide toe box. “When it comes to walking shoes for wide feet, the most important thing is the toe box,” says Kalhor. “You want enough room in the front so your toes can spread naturally without feeling squeezed.” A shoe that’s technically ‘wide’ but still narrow in the toe box won’t solve the problem, she warns. “Look for a shoe with a tighter fit by the heel for support and stability and a roomier feel by the toes for comfort and space,” adds Sonaike. ✔️ Find good arch and heel support. “The heel should be cushioned but not so soft that it feels wobbly,” advises Kalhor. “Increasing the arch height in a shoe helps control the foot width during standing and walking,” Sonaike also says. “A structured heel support will decrease motion.” ✔️ Look for flexible uppers and adjustable lacing. “Flexible uppers made of soft mesh are helpful because they accommodate width better,” Kalhor explains. “Also, adjustable lacing helps you fine-tune the fit.” “,”image”:”https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/prevention-line-break-1648844191-crop-6626ce3d51acc.png”}},{“@type”:”ListItem”,”position”:11,”item”:{“name”:”What shoes should I avoid if I have wide feet?”,”url”:”https://www.prevention.com/fitness/workout-clothes-gear/g70464815/best-walking-shoes-for-wide-feet/#slide-11″,”description”:”It’s best to avoid shoes with narrow or pointed toe boxes, which can compress toes and cause pain.
