When shopping for a tinted moisturizer, you want to look for a product that is lightweight, so it doesn’t settle into any creases or fine lines and wrinkles, according to Dr. Chacon. “Ideally a product that helps blur and blends with the skin upon application,” she says.
Both Dr. Chacon and Dr. Castilla say that you’ll want to pay special attention to the ingredient list. “Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid that will help bring moisture and plump the skin, ceramides that help support the skin barrier, dimethicone which can help provide uniform application,” Dr. Castilla says.
You should shop with your skin type in mind. According to Dr. Castilla, those with oiler skin types may want to look for something with a mattifying moisturizer, which can help keep your skin shine-free. On the other hand, if you have dry skin, she says glycerin is a must for that extra touch of hydration.
What’s the difference between tinted moisturizer and BB cream?
Much like a tinted moisturizer, Dr. Castilla says a BB cream provides coverage to even skin tone. However, the main difference between the two is that BB cream is thicker and provides slightly more coverage than the moisturizer alone.
“A moisturizer is also formulated with more hydrating ingredients to help support the skin barrier,” she continues, adding that tinted moisturizers will provide coverage, but you will see more of the natural skin come through.

The good news about using tinted moisturizer is that you don’t need any extra tools to put it on. “You can apply directly to the skin from your fingertips,” says Dr. Chacon.
For those who are layering, Dr. Chacon says you should save your moisturizer for last. “Tinted moisturizers are typically very light in weight and texture, so I recommend applying your concealer first then the tinted moisturizer, so you get a feel for how much you are wanting to use.”
If you don’t want to use your fingers, Dr. Castilla says you can also use a sponge or brush when you put it on, although she adds that it’s really not necessary. As for getting more color or coverage out of your tinted moisturizer, she says you’ll want to take things slowly and add a bit at a time. “If you want more coverage, you can reapply a small amount and blend it in,” she continues, noting that tinted moisturizers tend to be “more forgiving” in application than foundations.
