There are several factors to consider while shopping for your go-to everyday shoe. Experts recommend taking note of the following elements:
✔️Cushioning. The proper cushioning will help to ensure your feet feel supported and comfortable, even during long days on your feet. Mehta recommends paying close attention to cushioning around your heels and arches.
✔️Support. “People should look for shoes that have good arch support across the middle of the shoe,” says Melissa Lockwood, D.P.M., a podiatrist at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates in Bloomington, Ill. “A ‘twist test’—holding the shoe end to end and twisting in both directions—will help assess quickly while shopping. The more flexible the middle of the shoe, the less supportive for those who have to stand all day.”
✔️Size. Getting the fit right is important, Cheung says. “It should be snug but not tight, with enough room in the toe box to allow for slight toe movement,” he explains.
✔️Stability. A little flexibility in a shoe is good for comfort, but you don’t want to go overboard. “Too much give may change your walking mechanics,” Mehta says. Ultimately, “you want good stability on both the inner and outer portions of the ankle,” he says.
