I’m more than just a chronic night owl—I struggle with Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome, which means I often have trouble getting to sleep at an appropriate time, no matter how tired I am (yes, even with a perfectly cozy bed complete with a cloud-like mattress and comfy pillows). There are some things I’ve found that help me fall asleep and wake up easier, like my trusty sunrise alarm clock—but I’ve also found that these tools work best when combined with a good sleep supplement, like the Nature’s Craft Magnesium L-Threonate Complex Sleep Supplement.

I’ve tried melatonin supplements before for better sleep, but I’ve recently been curious about magnesium and its supposed benefits for sleep (I have friends and family who swear by it!). So, I tried it out myself with the Nature’s Craft magnesium sleep supplements, and I have to say I’m sold—these supplements have actually helped change my sleep routine for the better, and don’t give you any of the morning grogginess that’s typical with melatonin. And right now you can grab a bottle on sale with our special code PREVENT20.

How the sleep supplements work

A key ingredient in the these supplements is magnesium, an essential mineral that experts say can promote sleep. “Magnesium supports sleep by relaxing muscles, reducing nervous system excitability, regulating neurotransmitters, and lowering anxiety,” Stephanie Crabtree, M.S., R.D., a functionally minded dietitian based in Sarasota, FL, previously told Prevention. “It also plays a role in the production of your body’s own melatonin from the pineal gland, helping maintain a natural sleep-wake cycle.”

Magnesium is thought to “work potentially on regulation of neurotransmitters within the brain, specifically the ones that are called ‘inhibitory’ neurotransmitters (like GABA) which promote sleep and can make someone feel more relaxed,” Kenneth Lee, M.D., the medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at UChicago Medicine, further explained.

The Nature’s Craft supplements specifically contain magnesium L-Threonate, a form of magnesium that’s specifically engineered to cross the blood-brain barrier. Additionally, it also contains botanical ingredients like apigenin (a naturally occurring plant flavonoid found in chamomile and celery), L-theanine (an amino acid found in tea leaves, including matcha), and lemon balm extract—all of which have been shown to improve sleep quality.

Recommended dosage: 3 capsules (one in the afternoon, two before sleep)

How the sleep supplements worked for me

I’ve been taking the the sleep supplement as needed over the last three weeks, especially on nights when I had trouble getting to sleep or was experiencing nighttime anxiety or stress. The recommended dosage is three capsules—“preferably one capsule during the afternoon and two capsules one hour before sleep,” as the label says. Personally, I found it hard to remember to take one in the afternoon, so I usually just took two capsules at night.

Overall, I found that the days I took the supplements, my sleep routine vastly improved. Usually, I struggle with shutting my brain off at bedtime, which can keep me up for hours, but on the nights where I took magnesium, it felt easier (and quicker!) to fall asleep. Within an hour of taking the capsules, I started feeling calmer and more relaxed, and noticeably felt the pull of sleep on both my brain and body.

With other melatonin supplements I’ve tried, I often wake up feeling groggy and foggy. But with the ones from Nature’s Craft, I awoke feeling like I got deep, restful sleep without frequent wake-ups or disturbances, energized, and with a clear head.

What to know before trying sleep supplements

Sleep experts generally recommend first practicing good sleep hygiene—including keeping a consistent sleep and wake schedule, minimizing stimulating activity before bedtime, and avoiding caffeine and alcohol in the evenings—before turning to or relying on supplements as your first solution to getting better sleep. Additionally, experts warn that magnesium can have side effects like nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

That being said, magnesium can be helpful for improving sleep, according to experts. Crabtree personally recommends this supplement over melatonin as “an aid in getting deep, restorative sleep, and it has a strong safety profile for long-term use”—while melatonin is typically “best for difficulty falling asleep, jet lag, or adjusting your sleep schedule,” she notes.

The bottom line

All in all, the Nature’s Craft Magnesium L-Threonate Complex Sleep Supplement has been really helpful for improving my sleep routine. Don’t just take it from me, though—many reviewers also swear by them for better slumber.

“I’ve tried so many sleep aids over the years but nothing ever gave me consistent, restful sleep without the grogginess the next day. This magnesium sleep supplement has been a game changer,” one Amazon shopper wrote. “I feel myself winding down naturally within 30-45 minutes of taking it, and the best part? I stay asleep through the night and wake up feeling refreshed, not foggy. What I love most is that it’s melatonin-free—which means no weird dreams or messed-up sleep cycle.”

Luckily, if you want to try out these supplements yourself, you can currently snag the bottle discounted for 20% off at Amazon. Just make sure to add the code PREVENT20 during checkout to apply the discount!
