Dealing with thinning hair can be frustrating, if not exhausting. While finding the right products is the first step, it also needs constant attention and care to finally see a difference in your hair’s appearance. Sounds like a lot of work right? That’s why I spoke to a few dermatologists and hair experts for a few hacks to make your hair routine easier, effective, and affordable. These specialists told me the best tools for hair growth that won’t break the bank.

Items like scalp massagers, dermarollers, and anti-breakage brushes are what you need to support a stronger, denser mane if you have mild or moderate hair thinning. Dual Board-Certified dermatologist and Keranique Brand Partner, Sonia Batra, MD, says these devices “boost circulation, which is key to encouraging healthy follicles, and promote scalp health.”

While they won’t fully grow hair back, they’re helpful aid to use alongside your topical growth treatments. Think of them as “simple strategies,” per dermatologist Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD. “All scalps, even the already bald ones, can use some extra TLC by way of massage, exfoliation or treatment,” said the expert. Check out these dermatologist-backed options to revitalize strands, below.

Dermatologist-Recommended Hair Growth Tools

Heeta Scalp Massager

Amazon

Hair Transplant Surgeon Ross Kopelman, MD, dubs scalp massagers one of the “most underrated yet effective” options for encouraging hair growth — and they’re budget-friendly too. His top pick? This $7 Heeta Scalp Massager, which more than 118,000 Amazon shoppers also swear by. Dr. Kopelman explains that this product “helps stimulate blood flow to the scalp and can also enhance the absorption of topical treatments like minoxidil.”

Other dermatologists are also fans of scalp massagers as a quick and easy tool. Dr. Chacon recommends the Vegamour Gro Revitalizing Scalp Massager to “gently exfoliate while stimulating the scalp and hair follicles.” The silicone tool’s other bonuses include its soft bristles, ergonomic handles, and travel-friendly size. Meanwhile, Viktoryia Kazlosukaya, MD, PhD, and owner of Dermatology Circle in New York City, prefers an inexpensive option like this $10 Conair Scalp Massager. She adds that these hair scrubbers are ideal to use “while shampooing or after applying topical treatments or hair care products.”

Keranique Detangling Brush and Comb Set

Amazon

The Keranique Detangling Brush and Comb Set is the key to healthier and stronger tresses. Dr. Batra explains that breakage is a common cause of hair thinning, especially when constant use of heat tools can weaken strands. Dr. Batra says the vented brush “helps to minimize split ends and breakage,” whereas the wide-toothed comb can be used to “evenly distribute conditioner and detangle without tugging.” Both hair tools are also gentler options to use on the scalp. They provide a soothing massage that improves circulation, which supports healthier hair growth.

Vegamour Gro+ Advanced Dermaroller

Vegamour

The Vegamour Gro+ Advanced Dermaroller is a gentle solution that targets dead skin buildup and hair loss. Board-certified dermatologist Christina Han, MD, explains that “it uses a hand-held roller with small needles to stimulate the scalp and follicles with more blood flow and growth factors that come with wound healing.” On top of this, its exfoliating properties that clear the dead skin cells on the scalp allows for better absorption.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that a few studies have also shown microneedling (a.k.a., the method used in dermarollers) can help improve hair growth. For better results, Dr. Han and Dr. Kopelman suggest using it in tandem with topical treatment containing the FDA-approved minoxidil (a two or five percent concentration) or scalp-stimulating ingredients rosemary oil, caffeine, or peptides.

Keep in mind, though, the skin on the scalp is very delicate. As a result, dermarollers can potentially cause irritation, inflammation, and infection so gradually introduce to your hair care routine or check with a dermatologist if you have any pre-existing skin conditions.
