  • Charlevoix Cheese Company 8oz Mild Cheddar Cheese is being recalled.
  • The products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Here’s a list of impacted products and how to identify them.

It may be the season for gift baskets and snack plates, but there’s one cheese you’re going to want to leave out of your holiday plans. Charlevoix Cheese Company is recalling its 8oz Mild Cheddar Cheese due to the possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall after being notified by Boss Dairy Farms that routine testing had revealed the presence of this bacteria in one of the blocks of cheese.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can thrive when food is handled under unsanitary conditions. According to the FDA, this may take place anywhere throughout production, including initial harvesting, transporting, or preparation. If you believe you have recalled cheese, do not eat it.

The Charlevoix Cheese Company block that’s being recalled was only sold in retail stores in Wisconsin. The details needed to identify it are as follows:

  • Charlevoix Cheese Company 8oz Mild Cheddar Cheese
  • UPC: 850056642057
  • Lot number: 13220025
  • Best by date: 10/20/26

The bacteria may cause a disease known as listeriosis, which is a form of food poisoning. Most cases are localized and produce mild symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, muscle aches, and diarrhea. There are also more severe cases where Listeria moves beyond the digestive system and may cause symptoms such as confusion, loss of balance, stiff neck, and seizures.

In either scenario, symptoms generally start somewhere between a few days and two weeks of infection. Mild cases generally resolve within a few days, but listeriosis does have the potential to be life-threatening for infants, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems. The complications in those instances can be severe, and include miscarriage, pneumonia, sepsis, encephalitis, meningitis, and other serious health issues.

If you find this particular block of cheese in your refrigerator, you have two options: throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Do not eat it. Although no illnesses connected to this recall have been reported as of yet, you don’t want to spend the holidays sick.
