  • The Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op recall announced by the FDA last month has been expanded to include more varieties of cheese.
  • The recall is taking place after testing revealed listeria contamination on some product and cutting equipment surfaces.
  • See below for a list of impacted products.

Last month, Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op recalled more than 5,400 pounds of cheese due to potential listeria contamination. Unfortunately, that weight has now increased: The company just expanded the recall to include other varieties, according to a release published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The contamination fears were revealed after testing detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause infection, in finished cheese and cutting equipment. Keep reading to learn what to look for in your refrigerator’s cheese drawer.

Cheese recall details

The recalled cheese was distributed to retailers and dining halls in Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Texas between July 7 and August 14. Only the below varieties with specific lot codes and sell-by dates are affected.

  • Sunrise Creamery Dilly Pickle Monterey Jack with Pickles Cheese — 6 oz packages with lot code 253054, sell-by 1/7/26, 1/11/26 or 2/16/26 and 25 lb packages with lot code 253054, sell by 12/30/25

Previously recalled Middlefield cheeses included grass-fed pepper jack, horseradish flavored cheese, and more. See the FDA’s original release to make note of those specific products.

About listeria infection

Listeria monocytogenes are bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. In healthy individuals, infection may cause short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, but pregnant people are at risk of miscarriages and stillbirths.

At the time of publication, no illnesses related to either cheese recall have been reported.

What to do with recalled product

If you have impacted cheese, you should dispose of it or return it to where you purchased it for a refund. If you have questions regarding the recall, you can contact Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op’s general manager, Nevin Byler, at 440-632-5567 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST.
