Shopping for produce has been fraught during the season of cyclosporiasis and salmonella outbreaks. Now, a July recall of frozen berries potentially contaminated with E. coli bacteria has been expanded to include more products.
On July 3, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. issued a frozen blueberry recall affecting bags distributed to certain Publix locations. According to a new announcement made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on September 3, more products sold in select Walmart stores are now being added to the list of potentially contaminated products.

Which products are affected by the recall?
All of the recalled berries were manufactured by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., according to the FDA. While the original recall in July pulled GreenWise brand organic blueberries—which were primarily sold in Publix stores—from the shelves, the expanded recall includes a new brand that was distributed to Walmart stores in 16 states. Check your freezer for the following information.

Can eating the recalled berries make you sick?
As of right now, there aren’t any reported illnesses associated with the expanded recall, according to the FDA. However, consuming food contaminated with E. coli could certainly lead to digestive symptoms like “severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and vomiting.” While most people recover from an E. coli infection on their own within a week, immunocompromised people, young children, and older adults are at risk of developing severe complications from the infection.
What should you do with a recalled product?
The FDA is urging consumers who have the recalled berries in their home not to eat them and instead throw them away or return them to Walmart for a full refund.
