From heart health to mental health, sleep plays an important role in general well-being. Everything from the room temperature to your pillow has the potential to impact your rest. So, when I had the opportunity to upgrade my pillow and try the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow, I was so excited yet hesitant. To be honest, I didn’t expect to love it. In fact, I thought I might hate it. This is because I’ve had a years-long Goldilocks-like frustration with pillows and have never found one that was both super comfy and solved my sinus headache and neck pain issues.
In fact, over the years, I’ve accumulated nine pillows, and not one has been the perfect fit. A little backstory: I’m used to waking up most mornings with a sinus headache or a neck ache, so I’ve been on the search for a pillow that elevates my head just enough to help my sinuses drain while offering some neck support without sacrificing comfort.
I was super excited to try one of Saatva’s pillows since I splurged on a Saatva mattress a couple of years ago (I chose the Classic), and its been nothing less than a game-changer. After testing this Saatva pillow for over four weeks, it’s time for my verdict. Ahead, find my detailed review of the Saatva Down Alternative Pillow.
How I tested
I tested this Saatva pillow for over four weeks. I have less neck pain and post-nasal drip sinus problems—and I’m not stacking up multiple pillows, Princess and the Pea style (another bed-related fairy tale) to elevate my head. But I do have notes…
I usually sleep on at least two pillows stacked together, so I decided to go single-pillow for this testing period of one month. I wanted to see if Saatva’s design would give me the slight elevation often needed to help with my post-nasal drip and sinus drainage issues.
What I liked
First of all, the filling of this pillow doesn’t flatten during the night, which is a major plus. And it supports my head and neck regardless of whether I sleep on my back or side. I chose the “high loft” option (roughly 6-7 inches high) over the standard loft height (4-5 inches) because the taller pillow is supposedly better for back and side sleepers (me), and I wanted more elevation (again, sinuses). I also felt the higher loft may work for my single-pillow test without requiring bolstering from other pillows.
This single pillow did provide good neck and head support without being a specially contoured neck pillow. I’ve tried that type before, too, and it was a fail. (For me, that weirdly-shaped memory foam slab was too hard and the wonky shape was uncomfortable, especially when I slept on my side.) The Saatva down alternative pillow maintained its shape overnight (amazing) and provided good neck support—but not better than stacking two fluffy down pillows. And it took a while for me to get used to the firmness of the down alternative stuffing.
While I’m not usually a fan of synthetic fiber over down feather stuffing, I was impressed that this pillow remained almost totally undented after a night of sleep. The synthetic filling is “a blend of microdenier down alternative fibers and memory fiber clusters,” according to Saatva. Basically, it’s an ultra-fine, hypoallergenic polyester fiber fill that mimics the plush feeling of down.
What I didn’t
This down alternative pillow is much firmer than I’m used to, and I really enjoy that princess-y feeling of resting your head on a feathery down pillow (or a couple of them) and sinking into the plushness. I’m just not a fan of memory foam types of filling that feel cushy, yet dense and spongy. I have to admit, I missed the fluffiness, even though the down filling flattens almost immediately.
The bottom line
Personally, I prefer the fluffy, softer feeling of sleeping on feather pillows, and I may go back to them at some point. It’s the princess in me, what can I say? But if you like the feeling of a cushiony, foamy-yet-airy pillow made with down alternative fill, then this is an upgrade that’s worth the price—especially if you are a side- or back-sleeper. I much prefer this Saatva option to other ergonomically shaped memory foam neck pillows I’ve tried.
