Prevention editors have reviewed several weighted vests, even testing if they can help fight osteoporosis. Given their rise in popularity, I’ve been looking for a good deal on a weighted vest, and this one caught my eye immediately: The ApexUp weighted vest is over 50% off in every color and nearly every weight right now on Amazon, with 5- and 10-lb options falling under $15.
I first learned about the ApexUp weighted vest just a few months ago, when it was included on the Oprah’s Favorite Things 2025 list. (Apparently, Gayle’s son, Will, swears by it, too). Its popularity is confirmed by by all the glowing reviews on Amazon, which currently boasts a 4.6 stars from over 5,000 people. Among its many desirable attributes, shoppers say the fit is comfortable and that it’s easy to adjust using the strap.
One 61-year-old reviewer, who walks twice daily in her neighborhood, chose the 10-lb vest. “I have arthritis in my lower spine and really didn’t want anything heavier to aggravate it. It’s very comfortable, the weight is evenly distributed […] going up hill you can tell right away in your calves you’re carrying additional weight,” she said. “My heart rate increased as well so it did what it’s supposed to do. Very happy so far.”
Those who are weighted vest beginners (like me!) will be glad to know that it comes as low as five lbs, but it is also available in increasing five-pound increments up to 30lbs (so depending on your experience level, you can grab one in 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, or 30-lbs). Note: the weight of these vests aren’t adjustable, which means you can’t add or remove extra weight filling as needed; it just weighs what it weighs.
As for its effectiveness, we asked medical experts about the science behind adding a weighted vest to your workout, and learned that it can help prevent bone density loss and actually increase bone density. In short, working harder during a routine activity can stimulate your skeletal system to form more cells.
We also confirmed that weighted vests are recommended for women over the age of 50 (when bone loss starts to become an issue) or for people who are trying to lose a significant amount of weight. As always, consult your doctor about how to best use a weighted vest if you’re just starting out, or have medical issues and are unsure if it’s safe for you.
