Along with the hot flashes and sleep issues that come with menopause, I’m also concerned about protecting my bone density. To help stimulate bone-forming cells and improve bone density, my doctor recommended wearing a weighted vest while exercising. If you’re in the same boat, good news: One of our top-recommended vests is 50% off for Amazon Prime Day.

The Zelus vest currently boasts nearly 13,000 perfect 5-star reviews on Amazon. Customers agree that it’s comfortable to wear and doesn’t restrict their movement. If this is your first time purchasing a weighted vest, you may want to go with the 6-pound option (the lightest load) before working your way up.

All weights from 8 to 30 pounds are on sale right now, but this 12-pound option could be a good pick for those who already feel comfortable with the vest you have and are ready to add more weight. Other features here include a pouch with enough space for the essentials (keys, phone, and ID) and reflective strips on the front and back, which will come in handy for evening workouts. It’s also made with Spandex fabric for a comfortable fit.

Walking is my main form of exercise (no marathons on my calendar…yet!), and since my doctor agreed that it’s a good idea for me, I recently got this adjustable version. I like that I can add or subtract weight, depending on my activity—making it lighter for long hikes, heavier for short walks—and it’s very comfortable to wear. If you like this version better, it’s also 50% off for Prime Day.

Why wear a weighted vest?

In our guide to how to use a weighted vest, our experts noted that wearing a vest can help increase bone density:

“Wearing a weighted vest while exercising increases bone formation and decreases bone resorption,” explains Dr. Korsh Jafarnia, chief of Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Houston Methodist West Hospital. “When the skeletal system is loaded or stressed, this stimulates bone forming cells. Conversely, when mechanical loads are decreased, more bone resorption occurs.”

It adds extra resistance to exercises you can already comfortably perform, like running, walking, squats, or lunges. Make sure the vest doesn’t exceed 4 to 10% of your body weight, and adjust the weight as you progress. If you have osteoporosis, a history of fractures, heart issues, or are pregnant, consult your doctor before trying one.
