Welcome to Retail Therapy by Prevention! In this series, our editors provide thoughtful, honest reviews of what we’ve been testing lately that we want you to know about—because we refuse to keep these game-changing finds all to ourselves. Whether you’re on a mission to find something specific or simply need a little retail therapy in the form of an impulse purchase, consider this your insider’s shopping guide to everything our team thinks is worth the buy.

Whether you’re struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep, what you’re lying on is worth taking into account. There are mattresses for side sleepers, for people who sleep on their back, and more. Through all of our best of lists, one brand, in particular, gets a lot of attention: Saatva. So when I had the opportunity to test the Saatva Classic Mattress, I couldn’t wait to see if it lived up to the hype.

Saatva is a direct-to-consumer luxury mattress brand that offers claims of superior comfort, ergonomic support, and stands up to wear and tear—but how does it stack up in real life? I spent 16 months sleeping on the brand’s popular Classic mattress to bring you an in-depth Saatva mattress review and help your search for the best night’s rest.

Before I started sleeping on the Saatva Classic Mattress, I dealt with the frustrations of an old bed that simply no longer cut it. After years of tossing and turning, I woke up with aches and pains that were impossible to shake. That’s why I decided to give the flagship model from Saatva a try—what a complete game-changer. The quality of my sleep noticeably improved, and I can’t imagine going back to my old mattress. For a limited time, Prevention readers get 20% off—up to $1000—any mattress (the discount gets applied at checkout) by clicking on one of the Saatva links in this story.

To help you determine whether this mattress may be right for you, too, I tried not one but two different firmness levels (there are three to choose from!) and slept on the Plush Soft version for over 16 months to put together this comprehensive Saatva Classic Mattress review. I’m covering everything from firmness and feel to the mattress’s design to the delivery experience. Keep reading for my full and honest opinion.

How I tested

I’ve been sleeping on my Saatva Classic (Plush Soft) mattress in the queen size for about 16 months now, but before that, I also slept on the Saatva Classic (Luxury Firm) mattress for just over a month. I thought I picked the right cushion level, but the first mattress turned out to be way too firm for me and never felt quite right. I decided to exchange the mattress for the Plush Soft and was really impressed with the home trial and exchange policy (more on that later).

I’ve slept on the new mattress for over a year and am pleased with it. There was a brief break-in period, but I’d say my body adjusted to the second mattress within a week. Set up and delivery (both times) were also a breeze, and all the heavy lifting (literally and figuratively) was taken care of for me.

Firmness and feel

First things first: the Saatva Classic Mattress is a classic innerspring mattress, as opposed to a foam, latex, or hybrid mattress. An innerspring mattress uses metal springs or coils on the inside, is usually firmer than a foam mattress, and tends to be one of the most durable types (along with latex), according to Saatva. And while the Saatva Classic Mattress isn’t designed with cooling technology, innerspring mattresses tend to sleep cooler as the coils allow for more airflow and breathability, per the brand.

The mattress comes in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. On a scale of one to 10, Saatva rates Plush Soft a three, Luxury Firm a five to seven, and Firm an eight.

I initially picked the Luxury Firm option because I wasn’t quite sure which I would like best, and figured something right in the middle would work just fine. (My previous mattress was over 10 years old, and I had no idea its firmness level.) It also sounded promising that the Saatva website described the Luxury Firm option as “designed to replicate the feel of luxury hotel beds”—I mean, who wouldn’t want that? I gave this mattress a month to break in, hoping that eventually my body would adjust, and it would soften up, but that never quite happened. The mattress was much firmer than I expected, and I found myself waking up with aches and pains.

Thankfully, the Plush Soft option was just what I needed. During the first week, I still wasn’t quite sure it was right for me, but after that break-in period, it was smooth sailing. Important to note: I weigh about 150 lbs, which may be why I needed a more plush mattress that I could actually “sink into” a bit. With the Luxury Firm mattress, I felt like I was just lying on top of the mattress, whereas the Plush Soft mattress hugs my body a bit more and provides enough pressure relief on my hips, shoulders, and back. According to Saatva, the Plush Soft tends to be best for lighter-weight people “who often find mattresses to be too firm,” while the Firm may be better suited for “heavier body types.”

Another thing to consider is sleep position. I toss and turn like a rotisserie chicken throughout the night and switch between side sleeping, back sleeping, and stomach sleeping. Side sleeping is usually the position I spend most of the night in, and I found that (unlike my old mattress and the Luxury Firm mattress), the Plush Soft mattress felt great on my typical pain points—hips, shoulders, and neck. I don’t find myself switching positions due to pain anymore (maybe now it’s out of habit or restlessness). Saatva specifies that the Plush Firm mattress is ideal for side sleepers, which, in my experience, checks out.

However, I am also really comfortable sleeping on my back on this mattress. It hugs my body well, and I don’t feel any pressure on my neck or lower back like I used to while sleeping on my back. And while stomach sleeping always leaves me with all sorts of strange sensations when I wake up (because I sleep in a quite unnatural way, like I’m falling out of a plane in this position), I must say those pains have been greatly reduced since switching to this mattress.

Design and materials

This is a classic innerspring mattress with coil-on-coil construction (which helps avoid sagging and increase responsiveness, according to Saatva). It also has a zoned support system with five layers designed for optimal comfort, support, and durability.

  1. The 3-inch pillow-top layer consists of a breathable, hypoallergenic, organic cotton cover complete with a botanical antimicrobial treatment. It is also contoured with “Lumbar Zone Quilting” for extra support.
  2. The support layer is designed to provide lower back support and increased durability. It consists of high-density memory foam for pressure point relief and a “Patented Lumbar Zone Active Spinal Wire,” which the brand says helps keep the spine in healthy alignment.
  3. The comfort layer is made from 884 individually wrapped coils (11.5” queen-sized mattress). It is made firmer in the center third of the mattress to accommodate the increased body weight in that section and is designed to contour to the body’s curves to provide pressure relief and increased circulation.
  4. The fourth layer is for sturdy edge support and consists of high-density foam rails for stable edges, which the brand says makes getting in and out of bed easier.
  5. The bottom layer is the durable support base or base coil unit, which is made from tempered steel to prevent sagging and increase durability, per the brand.

Also worth noting: The Saatva Classic Mattress does not have fiberglass or chemical flame retardants for those who are averse to those materials. Instead, Saatva explains they use “a natural, plant-based thistle pulp flame barrier.”

Temperature regulation

I am a very hot sleeper, so I need bedding that keeps me cool throughout the night. I adore my SlumberCloud Essential Sheet Set and SlumberCloud UltraCool Comofter, both designed for temperature regulation, but I still found myself overheating throughout the night with my old mattress. However, when I put them on my new Saatva Classic Mattress, I felt a world of difference. I rarely wake up hot or sweaty and feel much cooler throughout the night with this mattress.

That may be because the mattress cover is “naturally breathable” and “made with organic cotton,” which the brand says “sleeps cooler”—or thanks to the “dual-coil design allows more airflow throughout to help disperse body heat.”

Delivery and customer service

The purchase of Saatva mattresses comes with free white-glove delivery and setup—they’ll even haul out your old mattress at no additional cost. A few days before each of my deliveries, I received an email with a four-hour delivery window informing me when to expect the team to arrive. Each time I received a call when the truck was a few minutes away, and they were in and out of my home in less than 10 minutes. To prepare for the delivery and removal, I simply stripped my old mattress of all bedding and moved any furniture out of the way.

Impressively, Saatva mattresses do not come compressed or rolled into a box. They are handcrafted, made to order, and arrive fresh from the factory, ready to sleep on. There is no waiting period for the mattress to decompress or emit initial odors (off-gassing).

Customer service was also wonderful when I realized my original Saatva mattress was not the right fit. Saatva offers a 365-night home trial on all mattresses (excluding mattress toppers and crib mattresses which have different trial periods)—meaning if you’re not satisfied with your purchase you can get a full refund or exchange for a $99 processing fee, which is pretty reasonable when you consider all mattresses are made to order and come with free delivery, set up, and removal.

Longevity and durability

After sleeping on the Saatva Classic mattress with the Plush Soft firmness level for over a year, I’m still pleased with it. I have yet to see any significant signs of wear. I change my bedding every one to two weeks and regularly inspect the mattress.

In terms of how the mattress feels, I have not noticed a loss of firmness or softness—after the approximate week-long break-in period I described above, its feel has remained consistent. I also haven’t noticed any dips or depressions in the areas where my partner or I lie, no sagging or lumps, or any rips or tears.

Overall, my quality of sleep has been wonderful, and I am still satisfied with my decision to switch to a Saatva mattress.

Where do I buy a Saatva mattress?

If you prefer to get an in-person feel for your mattress before making a purchase, you can see if one of Saatva’s 11 showrooms throughout the United States is located near you. However, you can also purchase directly from the Saatva website and rest assured by their white-glove delivery service and 365-night trial period.

When is the best time to buy a Saatva mattress?

By staying on top of Prevention’s sales coverage, you can buy a mattress at a serious discount. The online retailer regularly offers deals throughout the year for major sales events like Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, and Black Friday. And the brand sometimes runs flash sales. We also suggest browsing online for exclusive discount codes and offers—like Prevention’s $400 off orders over $1,000 deal (valid through March 15)—you can get by clicking any Saatva link in this story!

One last thing

My quality of sleep improved after I made the switch: I wake up less frequently throughout the night, I sleep cooler, I rarely wake up with aches and pains, and I feel much more energized throughout the day. If you’re wondering if a Saatva Classic Mattress is worth the money, yes. It is.

SHOP NOW

Although a Saatva Classic Mattress might be a bit more expensive than some competitors in the online mattress space ($2,095 for a queen-sized mattress), I believe the quality, customer service, trial period, and delivery experience make the mattress well worth the price. When you buy a Saatva mattress, you’re not buying a bed-in-a-box that needs to be unrolled, deflated, and placed on your bedframe yourself.

If you need even more of a reason to make the plunge, remember that the brand offers an impressive 365-night trial period, a lifetime warranty, free white-glove delivery, and easy exchanges/returns. And for a limited time, Prevention readers can get $400 off orders over $1,000 when they use one of the links in this story (discount applied at checkout). So now’s the time to snag your mattress while the sale lasts.
