The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that Oregon Potato Company LLC is recalling 55,689 lbs of frozen blueberries. The recall, which was voluntarily initiated earlier this month, is due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that may lead to listeriosis, a potentially dangerous disease that may cause symptoms ranging from mild (fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea) to more severe (headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions). People with weakened immune systems, newborns, and adults over the age of 65 are particularly susceptible to serious effects from listeriosis.
Due to the potential severity of the disease, the FDA ranked this recall as Class I, meaning the product is capable of causing “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Which products are affected?
According to a notice, the recalled blueberries were “not sold to consumers from retail stores.” The notice also states that impacted products were distributed in MI, OR, WA, WI, and Canada, though it does not say how they were distributed.
The recalled frozen blueberries were sold in 30 lb cases (packaged in polyethylene bags) and 1,400 lb Gaylord totes (packaged in polyethylene liners) and can be identified using the following lot codes and expiration dates.
30 lb cases:
- Lot # 2055 B2, expiration date 7/23/2027
- Lot # 2065 B1, expiration date 7/24/2027
- Lot #2065 B3, expiration date 7/24/2027
1,400 lb totes:
- Lot # 2205 A1, expiration date 11/25/2027
- Lot # 3305 B1, expiration date 11/25/2027
The frozen blueberries were packaged under the brand Willamette Valley Fruit Company and distributed across Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and Canada.
What to do with recalled product
Though the blueberries were not sold to shoppers from retail stores, according to the notice, if you believe you have impacted berries, do not eat them.
