Walking season is almost upon us, which means I am in the market for a new sturdy and comfortable pair of walking shoes that can endure miles of sweaty, long-distance journeys. When it comes to comfort and stability, top-notch brand New Balance is always at the head of the pack, and lucky for me, they just released what they have called “the most comfortable running shoe” in their updated 1080v15.
I am not a runner, but I have learned in my nearly two years of sneaker testing as Senior Commerce Editor at Prevention that often times, a versatile running shoe is better suited to walking because of its lightweight, breathable silhouette and supportive cushion. So, I decided to put it to the test. Did it live up to the brand’s claims? Here is how it went.
Fit
The 1080v15 is shockingly true to size. I had tried the previous iteration in my typical size of athletic shoe (a 9.5) and felt my feet sloshing around a bit too much. Having learned from my mistakes, I ordered a size 9 this time and it was the perfect length. Similar to its predecessor, this shoe has an extremely roomy toe box with ample room to spread for each step. However, it has received a makeover in its upper, which is now much more contoured, as well as made of a perforated mesh upper that provides lightweight breathability—even on my longest and warmest walks.
Cushioning
The cushioning is where this pair of shoes really shines and it has been the biggest improvement since its last version. Though this shoe used to be part of New Balance’s popular Fresh Foam line, it is now made of Infinion, a new technology developed by the brand for longer-lasting performance as well as a softer feel and improved energy return. The brand is boasting it as “the most comfortable running shoe we can make” — and I’m inclined to agree. In fact, I’d go as far as to say I think it is one of the most comfortable running shoes I have ever tried (and I have tried a LOT), and ranks among my top-tier Hoka Bondi 9 and Brooks Ghost Max. That’s because not only is the cushion still incredibly lightweight and springy enough to keep me moving at an extremely fast pace (on our last errands walk together, my wife actually called out for me to slow down, which is not typical!), but it has much more shock absorption than my prior model for a softer (and thus more comfy!) landing on each stride. Although I am not a runner by any means, I do appreciate that this update is also supposed to make the foam feel brand new with each wear, instead of compressing over time. I obviously have not used them quite long enough to make that call yet, but a month in, it definitely still holds true. The only thing I wish had received an upgrade is the tongue, which is a little too stiff for my liking and I found required adjusting to find the perfect spot so it would not rub against my sock.
Stability
The 1080v15’s ultra-responsive midsole should have made them less stable, considering their bouncy stride, but the contoured arch gave me a ton of support with each step. I attribute this to the new midsole, which offers neutral support and improved shock absorption. My first walk, I was a little unsure, but after tying them slightly tighter, I found myself feeling totally secure and supported. I haven’t experienced that problem again.
How I tested
I wore the New Balance 1080v15 cushioned sneakers for one month on lengthy walks, errands, commuting, and around city streets. I wore them through both icy and wet weather, too, to see how they held up in terms of stability and support, specifically.
Bottom line
Are they “the comfiest running shoe” New Balance can make? I don’t know. But they are definitely the comfiest running shoe they have made. I was worried that the updated contouring of the upper and departure from the Fresh Foam line would be a detriment to this new iteration, but I can admit when I am wrong. If you are looking for a lightweight, versatile sneaker for spring and summer that will keep your feet cushioned and comfortable for long distances and hours, this shoe is a worthy purchase.
