✔️ Opt for a non-slip outsole. McDowell comments that most nurses work on non-carpeted floors all day, so a non-slip or slip-resistant outsole is helpful in eliminating risk that can lead to unwanted accidents. “Non slip sole is a key feature, as most nursing environments have hard floors (no carpet!),” she says. “Nurses are always running around and may be getting their shoes wet,” Parthasarathy agrees.

✔️ Know your foot type. It’s important to find a shoe that supports your particular gait and foot shape. “Some people will prefer rigid support while others like more cushioning,” explains Parthasarathy. “What is important is knowing your foot type: overpronator, supinator, or neutral, so you get the right shoe for your foot.” She advises visiting your podiatrist—“especially if you have foot issues,” she says.

✔️ Look for removable insoles. Julie Schottenstein, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S., F.A.C.P.M., a double board-certified podiatrist at The Schottenstein Center- Advanced Foot, Ankle, and Leg Care, recommends looking for shoes with removable insoles as it allows you to insert your own orthotic insoles—ones that best support your foot type. “Custom orthotics are amazing for helping to get the spine into a good alignment by ‘neutralizing’ the foot [to help reduce overall pain],” she explains.

✔️ Check for a rocker bottom. According to Parthasarathy, a rocker bottom design enables seamless pressure transfer from heel strike to toe off. If you’re looking for a shoe that helps eliminate joint pressure or you struggle with plantar fasciitis, this is a desirable feature.

✔️ Choose a wide toe box. “When nurses are on their feet all day, feet tend to naturally swell, and a tight toe box can be a contributor to hammer toes or bunions!” warns McDowell. The solution? A wide toe box. “You should be able to wiggle all of your toes when wearing the shoe,” she explains. “If a shoe makes your toes touch or pushes your big toe uncomfortably against your second toe, the toe box is too narrow.”
