11 Best Nail Strengtheners for Healthier, Stronger Nails, According to Experts and Testing

Aside from using topical nail strengtheners, there are several expert-approved ways to improve the health of weak, damaged nails.

✔️ Hydrate and moisturize. “Frequent moisturizing of the nails and its surrounding skin, in conjunction with drinking enough water, can also help maintain hydration and help prevent the formation of brittle nails,” says Dr. Rambhia. So, fill up your water bottle and stock up on your go-to hand cream and cuticle oil!

✔️ Keep nails short and tidy. Dr. Rambhia also suggests trimming nails regularly and keeping them on the shorter side if you notice splitting or chipping, since “longer nails are more prone to breakage.”

✔️ Take a break from polish. We know you love your manicure, but giving nails a break every once in a while can benefit your overall nail health, says Dr. Farber. This is because some nail polishes and nail polish removers contain drying ingredients. “Additionally, repeated exposure to gel and acrylic manicures can compromise the integrity and strength of the nail plate, leading to increased fragility,” says Dr. Rambhia. Try taking a few days to a week off between manicures and apply only your chosen nail strengthener to your nails.

✔️ Limit water exposure. “Constant exposure to water can weaken nails, making them soft and more prone to damage,” explains Dr. Rambhia. “So for those that do lots of wet work, I recommend using gloves while washing dishes or cleaning to limit water contact.”

✔️ Eat a protein-rich diet. Dr. Rambhia explains that nails are made up of keratin—a type of protein. “So ensuring adequate protein intake is essential,” she says. “Lean meats, tofu, and legumes can support nail health and repair!”
