According to Sharkey, the best shoes for plantar fasciitis are those that provide structured support, stability, cushioning, and arch support. “A good shoe is one that is going to reduce strain on the plantar fascia and support proper foot alignment,” she explains. Here’s what to specifically look for in shoes if you have plantar fasciitis:

✔️ Look for good cushioning and arch support. Shoes with “structured arch support” and “cushioning that absorbs impact without being overly soft or unstable” are best for plantar fasciitis, says Pourziaee. Soft, ample cushioning will help absorb shock and alleviate pressure on your feet—while proper arch support can also help distribute pressure evenly across your feet and reduce strain on the plantar fascia.

✔️ Find a firm heel counter. Both Parthasarathy and Pourziaee recommend shoes with a firm, supportive heel counter. This can help keep the heel steady and minimize additional stretching of the plantar fascia.

✔️ Check for a roomy toe box. Experts also recommend shoes with a spacious and wide toe box, which can help prevent pressure, squeezing, and discomfort in the toe area of your foot.

✔️ Choose a moderate heel-to-toe drop. The heel-to-toe drop is the difference between the height of the heel and the height of the forefoot of the shoe. Pourziaee recommends opting for a shoe with a moderate, “slightly elevated” heel-to-toe drop—around 10 to 12 mm—which can “help reduce tension on the plantar fascia,” he notes.

✔️ Opt for a removable insole. Parthasarathy recommends opting for shoes with a removable insole, which will allow you to fit in your own custom or over-the-counter orthotic to help your plantar fasciitis.
