  • Over 1.5 million cartons of eggs have been recalled due to potential salmonella contamination, per the FDA.
  • Affected eggs were marketed under multiple brand names and sold at grocery stores in several states.
  • Here’s how to identify products included in the recall, and what to do with them.

If you have eggs in your fridge, you may want to check them before cooking up your next omelette. According to a report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 1,589,577 cartons of eggs sold in six states have been recalled due to potential salmonella contamination.

The affected eggs were produced by Texas farms owned by Midwest Poultry Services, L.P., and marketed under multiple brand names. They were stocked on shelves at Kroger in Texas and Louisiana; at Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi; and at “other smaller retail outlets,” per the FDA.

As of July 22, Midwest Poultry Services L.P. was reportedly not aware of any adverse health effects connected to eggs included in the recall. However, salmonella infection can be serious, especially for the young, elderly, and immunocompromised. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), people infected with salmonella commonly experience diarrhea, stomach cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. In rare cases, the infection can spread to other parts of the body, causing additional complications.

Below, how to identify affected eggs and what to do with recalled cartons.

What to do with affected eggs

The FDA urges consumers not to eat any affected eggs, and instead return them to their place of purchase for a refund. Those with additional questions may contact Midwest Poultry Services either via email ([email protected]) or phone (574-405-9531).

If you have eaten affected eggs and are experiencing symptoms of salmonella infection, contact your healthcare provider.
