Frozen blueberries are a great addition to high-protein yogurt bowls, smoothies, and more. But if you regularly buy yours at Publix, you may want to take a second look at the bag before reaching in for a handful. GreenWise Frozen Blueberries sold at the retailer in eight states are being recalled, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
Per the FDA’s announcement, the berries are being pulled from shelves because they may be contaminated with E. coli, which “can cause illness characterized by severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and vomiting.” While many people who contract E. coli-related illness recover within a week, some infections can lead to more serious complications, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), especially in immunocompromised individuals, young children, and older adults.
As of right now, 12 confirmed cases of stomach illness associated with the recall have already been reported. Here’s everything you need to know.
Which products are impacted by the recall?
The recalled berries were all manufactured by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. in San Carlos, Chile, and distributed to Publix stores in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Check your freezer for the following information.
- Product: Frozen GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries
- Package size: 10 oz
- Lot code: 60401
- Best by date: February 9, 2028
More information, including photos of the packaging, can be found in the FDA’s enforcement report.
What should I do with a recalled product?
If you do have one of the recalled bags of berries in your freezer, you should not consume them, per the FDA. Instead, throw them out or return them to the store you purchased them from for a full refund. If you have any questions about the recall, you can contact the manufacturer at [email protected] or 336-899-5612 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST. If you have consumed the recalled berries and have any health concerns, be sure to contact a doctor right away.
