  • Denise Austin shared three low-impact exercises with her Instagram followers.
  • These moves are intended to raise the heart rate without putting stress on the joints.
  • These exercises may be particularly beneficial for older adults and people with preexisting joint issues.

It’s exceedingly common to develop problems with one or more joints as you age—and that pain and discomfort may discourage you from working out. But it’s important to keep moving, albeit in ways that don’t exacerbate symptoms.

That’s where Denise Austin’s latest workout comes in. The 69-year-old fitness guru shared three low-impact moves on Instagram, which she says will “burn fat” and “boost your metabolism” without putting additional stress on your joints.

The exercises “are easier on your knees, your hips, and your whole body… while still delivering real results you can see and feel,” Austin wrote in her Instagram caption. “You do not have to punish your body to see change,” she added, “you just have to show up consistently and give it everything you have got.”

Below, check out a primer on Austin’s joint-friendly workout.

How to do Austin’s “low-impact” exercises

Side jacks

A variation of the more famous jumping jack, the “side jack” begins in a neutral standing position. From there, kick your left leg to the side as you bend your right knee, and reach both arms up. Repeat, alternating sides.

Crossover punches

Begin in a standing position. Step your right leg forward and to the side, lowering into a lunge as you punch with your left arm. Step back into a neutral standing position before repeating on the opposite side.

Knee lifts

While standing, pull both elbows down as you kick your right knee up. Raise your arms as you lower your right knee, before immediately raising your left knee and pulling your elbows down to meet it.
