When we want fun new moves to incorporate into our fitness routines, we look to Denise Austin. The fitness pro is a wealth of knowledge, with useful tips on everything from core strength to weight training. Fittingly for the first heatwave of the year, the 69-year-old most recently took to Instagram to share a new leg toning routine with her followers.
“I love these moves to really firm up your legs and get everything feeling strong and sculpted. And GET READY to wear our shorts again with summer coming,” Austin captioned her Instagram post. “And an extra benefit…is [that] a little bit of jumping can be so helpful for your bones too! It’s a great way to support bone density as we age…These moves will get your heart rate up, fire up those leg muscles, and have you feeling GREAT and ENERGETIC in no time!”
We’ve got the details on each move below so you can try the workout for yourself, no props required. Austin recommends doing each move for one minute. “Stay consistent, keep moving, and remember…YOU can do it!”
High knee jumps
Starting standing with one foot in front of the other, a bit wider than shoulder-width distance apart, Austin bends her back knee toward her chest while swinging her arms so that her opposite arm is straight out in front of her and her other arm is behind her in an upper-body twist. At the same time, she hops with her standing leg before returning to the starting position with a rocking motion. “Lift the chest up and lift through the legs,” she explains.
Jumping side lunges
Next, Austin stands with her feet parallel in a straddle position. “Go side to side,” she demonstrates, bending one knee and twisting her upper body to touch the opposite arm to the knee in a side lunge position before switching to the other side with a hop. “You have to jump a little bit.”
If you’re excited to show off strong and sculpted legs this summer, add one or both of these moves to your next workout.
