  • Champion Foods recalled Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread due to potential salmonella contamination.
  • Salmonella can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever within hours of infection.
  • Specific details about the recalled products are below.

On nights when you can’t be bothered to cook, there’s nothing like popping a frozen pizza in the oven. But if you’ve got a stash of them in your freezer, you may want to take inventory—because a frozen pizza brand sold at Costco, Target, and other retailers just recalled a popular frozen cheese bread.

On May 29, Champion Foods announced a recall of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread due to possible salmonella contamination. According to the company, this move comes after California Dairies, Inc. recalled a separately manufactured milk powder, used in the product’s cheese blend.

At the time of publication, neither Champion Foods LLC nor its suppliers has received any reports of illness or injury related to the recalls, and routine testing of the seasoning blend completed before the production of the 5 Cheese Bread was negative for salmonella. Even so, the manufacturer is moving forward with the recall out of an abundance of caution. Keep reading for more details on the recall, as well as information about salmonella infection.

What to know about salmonella

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever. It can spread through raw or undercooked foods or via improper food handling.

Most people who become infected with salmonella develop symptoms (such as diarrhea, fever, or cramps) between 6 hours and 6 days after exposure, and are sick for four to seven days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, at-risk populations like young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems can fall very ill—developing lethargy, a rash, and blood in the urine or stool—and could face the risk of death.

More rarely, salmonella infection can lead to complications, including infection of the blood, bones, joints, brain, or other organs. These complications cause additional symptoms.

If you purchased an affected product, here’s what to do

You are advised not to consume products affected by the recall. If you want more information about the recall or to explore your options for a potential refund, you can contact Champion Foods customer service via email at [email protected].
