The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a report warning that some prepared foods—primarily salsas, guacamoles, and dips—sold at popular outlets like Target and Walmart have been recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. The affected products are all manufactured by Taylor Fresh Foods, and contained jalepeños linked to a salmonella outbreak.
According to the FDA, Taylor Fresh Foods initiated the recall after learning that jalepeños from one of its suppliers, Coast Citrus Distributors, had been recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. The affected products were on shelves at seven major retailers—Hannaford, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Whole Foods—in 26 states. (This news comes after lettuce from Taylor Farms was linked to a recent outbreak of cyclosporiasis.)
As of Sunday, Taylor Fresh Foods hadn’t received any reports of illness connected to its prepared foods. However, salmonella can cause serious, even fatal illness—particularly in younger, older, and immunocompromised people.
