Last year, after being diagnosed with osteoporosis, my doctor recommended I try wearing a weighted vest during my weekly workouts to improve my bone health. I took this challenge extremely seriously and incorporated Omorpho’s G-Vest into my daily workouts for 60 days. I loved it! A year later, I am still a huge fan because in addition to its bone-strengthening benefits, I always get compliments on its super stylish look (especially compared to other weighted vests).

In a couple of months, I will be hitting the big 7-0 (yes, 70 years—a milestone!). And while my weighted vest has improved my diagnosis, I am still fighting to overcome my osteoporosis with mechanical loading routines—specifically a lot of walking and intense strength training workouts. When I was offered the chance to test out the G-Tight, a new weighted legging from OMorpho, I knew I needed to see if it benefited my workouts as much as my beloved G-Vest.

What are the benefits of weighted leggings?

Similar to the studied benefits of a weighted vest, weighted clothing (including leggings) can be beneficial in improving bone density, especially on postmenopausal women, according to a 2007 study. Other benefits can include:

  • Improved endurance and cardiovascular health
  • Extra resistance strengthens muscles
  • Burns more calories during a workout

How I tested

For the last two months since I received them, I have worn the G-Tight weighted leggings on full days, which included 14,000+ step days of commuting into the office, as well as to my three times a week weight training classes (which are very intense!). I also wore them on treadmill walks and to my progressive overload training sessions. I wore a size small, which was ideal for my five-foot, 117-lb frame.

How does the OMorpho G-Tight work?

Similar to the G-Vest that I love, the OMorpho weighted leggings (G-Tights) utilize the brand’s patented MicroLoad technology, which features evenly distributed high-density polymer micro-weights fused directly onto the fabric of the leggings. These weights are targeted to avoid adding weight to the joints, so you can still move freely and preserve your natural biomechanics (unlike ankle weights which can add strain to your joints). The leggings are available in sizes XS-XL to fit most bodies in five different colors and have a smooth, but sculpted fit that is reminiscent of most luxury leggings.

The tights are only 11 oz (less than 1 lb!), but you can opt to add weight plates into the side pockets if you want more resistance. OMorpho claims the additional benefits of these tights are:

• Enhanced stride and power potential

What I liked

When wearing the G-Tights, I felt the extra load was barely noticeable, but during exercise my muscles felt it. The subtle resistance was challenging but never felt overwhelming. As someone still relatively new to weighted clothing, I felt it was an ideal starting point to build strength and endurance safely. I did not test the newly released 2-lb weight pockets that can be added to the generous and handy hip pockets, but I am looking forward to ordering them as I get progressively stronger and need more of a challenge.

I loved wearing these weighted leggings so much (especially on my long work days when I wasn’t able to fit in a separate workout), but they are also perfect for runs, hiking, yoga, Pilates, spin classes—I can’t think of any activity that wouldn’t be enhanced by them. And I was particularly impressed at how comfortable they were. The fabric is extremely high quality. It’s breathable, moisture-wicking, and looks so sleek. The sporty chic style was so striking that even my trainer commented she was impressed by their look (before she knew the function!). Best of all, the leggings are machine washable (I washed them in cold water turned inside out, gentle cycle, and then air-dried), and they have yet to show any signs of wear and tear.

What I didn’t like

I didn’t find anything not to like about these weighted leggings, to be honest. I would call them out for being costly ($119 isn’t cheap!), but they’re only slightly more expensive than the leggings at luxury athletic stores like Lululemon and Alo Yoga—neither of which have the additional weighted benefits. And can you really put a price tag on good health?

One last thing…

If you feel your fitness has leveled off to a plateau, I think the G-Tight weighted leggings could help to propel you to your next breakthrough and make training
more effective. I found that my muscles and cardiovascular system were challenged just enough to adapt and grow stronger after adding it to my workouts. It’s also an excellent way to build functional strength in your legs and core without changing your routine. I definitely feel that it’s helped improve my power, endurance, resilience, and efficiency, and my fingers are crossed that by the time I hit my big upcoming birthday, I’ll be able to celebrate with a bone density scan that shows vast improvement for the future.
