  • Laura Geller just shared the top makeup “mistake” women with mature skin often make.
  • The makeup artist believes in updating your makeup routine as you age.
  • She suggests limiting the use of powder if you struggle with dryness or fine lines.

When it comes to beauty advice, we can always rely on Laura Geller to deliver. The makeup artist and founder of her eponymous brand, Laura Geller Beauty, often shares her most important makeup tips for women over 50, and now she’s revealing what not to do to ensure a flawless, youthful-looking finish.

“The number one mistake I see is women using the exact same makeup routine they’ve been using for decades,” Geller shares with Prevention. “The truth is, as we age, our skin changes and our makeup should change with it.”

But what exactly should we change as we age? “Mature skin craves hydration, so I always recommend reaching for products with nourishing ingredients that won’t settle into fine lines or leave skin looking dry,” she explains. An easy fix? “Swapping heavier formulas for lightweight, skin-loving products can instantly make your complexion look fresher, healthier, and more youthful.”

The makeup pro recently spoke with Prevention about her top makeup tips for women over 40, sharing exactly the type of products that those with mature skin should reach for. Her number-one product recommendation is starting with a hydrating primer, such as the Laura Geller Spackle Skin Perfecting Primer: Hydrate “I can’t stress enough the importance of primer!” she emphasized to us. “Primer acts as a barrier between your skin and the makeup, preventing your foundation or concealer from settling into wrinkles, which I know can be a struggle for ladies over 40.”

She also suggested opting for cream products that “create a blurring effect for a more youthful-looking complexion.” Her picks? The Laura Geller Wonder Balm and the Baked Illuminating Face + Body Bronzer, whose hydrating formulas “sink into the skin rather than sit on top of it,” she says. “The result is a natural, lit-from-within finish.”

Geller has always been a proponent of updating your makeup routine to help women of a certain age both look and feel their best, and she hasn’t steered us wrong yet. Below, find her favorite makeup products for a flawless, radiant-looking complexion for mature skin—many of which are currently on sale .
